Team Academy was originally founded in 1993 at JAMK (Jyväskylä) University of Applied Sciences and combines the worlds of business and education. All teams operate as independent cooperative companies. Students have to do real-life projects, which they have to find or create themselves, to cover all the expenses of the company. Projects function both as learning environments (for studies and developing the individual’s competencies) and as ways of doing business (for team companies). Learning is viewed as an ongoing process and is not divided into modules or subjects like marketing or leadership. Today Team Academy has expanded its activities to many other countries, including Mondragón. This branch of Team Academy provides a unique opportunity into the challenges faced when setting up an established educational model in a new cultural setting.

“In times of change learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.“ – Eric Hoffer
Learning is a cyclical process and we facilitate our learning journeys so they unfold in a dynamic interplay with these four major activities.
1. Immersion: each visit provides a direct experience of the culture inside each school visited; through real life projects, stories, conversations and hands-on activities. We take time to explore some of the major issues these schools have dealt with from ideation through conception onto maturity, providing context and insight into the behind-the-scenes workings of the schools. We aim to highlight the core challenges that these schools have confronted in opposing and transcending the status quo.
2. Observation: you will be guided to observe contrasts between conventional assumptions and practices in use at each school while comparing them to the assumptions that arise within your own worldview.
3. Action: throughout the journey you will partake in a series of experiments, testing the learning as we move forward to expand our understanding and embody it in our own practice.
4. Reflection: we will provide settings that stimulate personal reflection by ensuring that you have time to process challenging experiences, to recognize your thought patterns and reactions and to decipher what they mean.
It important to highlight that these educations are not anomalies. Along the way we will bring examples from elsewhere, naming other programs and initiatives that rely on similar beliefs and practices to achieve remarkable outcomes. In doing this we aim to ensure that we keep a constant focus on the context-dependent aspects of learning.
“Tell me and I’ll forget. Show me and I may remember. Involve me and I’ll understand.” - Chinese Proverb
